If you'd rather skip the private road section, simply continue along Poyntzs Road and turn right onto South Eyre Road, which reconnects with the main route.
Standing an impressive 45 metres tall, the Fire Watch Tower was built in 1965 and was once staffed daily to keep watch for fires across the vast Eyre Forest. Today, the forest has disappeared, replaced by rolling dairy farmland, but the tower remains a fascinating reminder of the area's past.
The ride begins at the historic Old Waimakariri Bridge and finishes at the popular Platform Café, Bar & Restaurant in Mandeville—perfect for a post-ride meal and a chance to swap stories from the trail.
This is a relaxed and enjoyable route that combines sealed roads, gravel backroads, and scenic dirt tracks along the riverbanks. You'll need to open just one gate along the way, and the route crosses the Eyre River three times. Fortunately, the Eyre is dry almost all year round, making the crossings straightforward. If the river is in flood, however, it's best to save this adventure for another day.
