Comments: Before setting off, make sure you top up the fuel tank—this is a 200 km return trip, and there are no fuel stops once you leave Amberley.

The adventure begins by following the Waipara River upstream, winding through the spectacular Waipara Gorge before skirting the Hawarden Forest and venturing deep into New Zealand's remote high country. The ride is straightforward and enjoyable until you reach Lake Taylor, where the road becomes a little rougher. Nothing too challenging on an adventure bike, but just enough to remind you that you're well off the beaten track.

Not far beyond lies Lock Katrine, a stunning spot to stretch your legs, enjoy a bite to eat, or simply soak in the peaceful surroundings. If you're looking to turn the ride into an overnight adventure, it's also an excellent camping location.

Continue following the road until you reach the locked gate—the end of the public road. From here, you're rewarded with breathtaking views across Lake Sumner, a fitting finale to a ride that takes you into one of Canterbury's most beautiful and secluded backcountry landscapes.

Be sure to be prepared for all weather conditions and if you are solo the smart thing to take is a Personal Location Beacon in case the unexpected should happen.
