Water crossings: Yes, 6 streams, 1 river

Comments: Chasing surreal, cinematic landscapes? Skip the direct route from Rangiora to Oxford and take the long way around through some of North Canterbury’s most spectacular backcountry.

This ride delivers a fantastic mix of sealed and gravel roads, winding through remote valleys, rolling hill country, and dramatic river scenery. Expect around six stream crossings, one river crossing, and a few gates to open along the way—just enough adventure to keep things interesting.

Important:

The middle section passes through private land at MacDonald Downs. Permission is required before riding through.

To request access, contact Liz:

  • Phone or text: 027 475 6008

  • $15 per bike includes access permission and the gate lock code where the private road meets Okuku Pass Road.

  • Please pay and sign in at the office as you pass through

  • Access may occasionally be unavailable due to farming operations.

River conditions

Before heading out, check the Okuku River level

As a guide, river flows above 2 m³/s can become challenging for larger adventure bikes.
