Comments: There are few rides in New Zealand that combine sweeping alpine scenery, remote backcountry roads, and true adventure quite like the journey from Fairlie to Kurow via Mackenzie Pass and the Hakataramea Pass. Leaving Fairlie behind, the route climbs steadily into the rugged high country, where gravel roads wind through rolling tussock-covered hills, historic station country, and breathtaking vistas stretching across the Mackenzie Basin. Mackenzie Pass offers an exhilarating mix of flowing corners and spectacular viewpoints before descending into the isolated Hakataramea Valley. From there, the climb over Hakataramea Pass rewards adventure riders with a true sense of remoteness, where the only sounds are the wind, the bike, and the occasional sheep. The ever-changing terrain, from open plains to rocky hilltops, makes every kilometre engaging, while the vast landscapes remind you just how wild and untouched this part of the South Island remains. The ride finishes with a satisfying descent into Kurow, leaving riders with dusty boots, unforgettable memories, and a deep appreciation for one of New Zealand's finest adventure motorcycling routes.
