Comments: Starting from Alexandra, this is an epic Central Otago adventure ride that heads into the high country via Hawksburn Road before joining the legendary Nevis Road. The route quickly leaves civilisation behind, trading sealed roads for gravel, open tussock country and huge mountain views. Hawksburn Road provides a spectacular backcountry link towards the Nevis, with plenty of climbs, descents and wide-open scenery before the real adventure begins.

The highlight of the ride is undoubtedly Duffers Saddle, sitting around 1,275 metres above sea level and widely recognised as the highest point on a public road in New Zealand. Located between the Carrick Range and the Old Woman Range, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic as you climb towards the saddle, with distinctive schist rock tors and high-country tussock. From there, the Nevis Road drops into the remote Nevis Valley and continues south towards Garston, with historic gold-mining sites, rough gravel, steep sections and numerous stream and river crossings along the way. This is a true adventure ride, so check conditions before heading out, be prepared for rapidly changing weather and make sure your bike—and your riding skills—are up to the challenge.
